Seven Irons To Wedge – Golf Club

The short irons comprise those clubs from the 7 iron through to the wedge. The higher the club number, the shorter the shot and the greater the need for accuracy.

Any reasonably proficient player will be hoping to hit the green at least eight times out of ten with any clubs numbered seven, eight or nine. Any professional will be truly disgusted if he does not get the ball to within 20 feet or 6 meters of the hole with a wedge.

Seven Irons

Most beginners start out hitting shots with clubs such as the 7 iron and quickly make friends with them. The natural loft of the club means that they are straight forward to use and there is no problem getting the ball airborne.

The accent is on finesse and accuracy, and the vast majority of players feel more comfortable trying to transmit those qualities with a golf club than when the accent is on power.

The maximum distance we are talking about here is 150 yards or 137 meters, which is about the outer limit that a good player will expect to hit when using a 7 iron. More typically, the average amateur will hit it 130 to 140 yards.

Because it is so important that you hit the greens frequently when using your short irons, it is vital that you know just how far you hit with your 7 iron. To find out this information, do a simple yardage check. Once you know your capabilities with a 7 iron, take ten yards off for each club of a higher denomination.

Perfect practice

Always remember that you can save many more shots practicing your short game than with your long irons or driver. If your practice time is limited and you do not know whether to work on your ball striking with your woods or your technique around the greens, plump for the latter.

After all, think of a player who not only captained three Ryder cup teams but also competed in eight. This was a man who was fairly unimpressive off the tee, but more than made up for it with tenacity and confidence around the greens.

There is no way that he would have achieved all he did in the game if his skills had been the other way round, where he had been great off the tee, but possessed an average short game. Always practice with purpose, aiming at specific targets at known distances. Get to know the distance each of your short irons will give you.
