Putting Green Golf – The Putting Setup

It is often said that there is more room for individually in putting than in any other area of the game. However, although you see a variety of weird and wonderful putting styles demonstrated successfully in professional golf, you must remember that the top players have developed an enhanced sense of touch through experience and regular practice.

If your quirky stroke with all its glorious idiosyncrasies serves you well, do not change a thing, but if you are prone to bouts of inconsistency then it is probably time to give your putting stroke an overhaul, starting with a review of the basics.

Before You Address The Ball

First you must read the putt. Take your first look as you arrive on the green, gauging a general idea for the putt, then look at the putt from at least two angles, usually from behind the hole and behind the ball. You should have a good idea of the break by the time you are finished.

Take some practice swings from behind the ball, keeping an eye on the hole as you do. Try to picture in your mind the ball traveling up the break you have chosen and into the hole. When you have got a clear image in your mind’s eye, stand up to the ball.

The Basics Of Putting

Putting is not rocket science. In involves hitting the ball along the ground using a fairly short stroke, back and through. As with the full swing, you’re putting routine starts by aiming the club carefully at your intended line.

Once you have done that correctly, you can then build the rest of your stance around the alignment of the putter face.

With this shot it is the leading edge that digs into the sand. The club face is closed and the ball is played back towards the middle of the feet. To create the steep downward attack into the ball, put most of your weight on the left side.
