Playing The Splash Shot In Golf

As well as aligning your body slightly to the left of the target for a standard splash or greenside bunker shot, you should open your stance slightly for a medium length bunker shot, and increase the angle to play shots from shorter range and with greater height.

You will also need to shuffle your feet one inch or so down into the sand to give yourself a more stable footing, enabling you to stand on the harder base level of sand rather than the fluffier top layer.

Shuffling your feet down also lowers your whole body and, in turn, the base point of your swing. Consequently, the club head will enter the sand and slide right underneath the ball.

Finally, you should remember to play the ball just forward of center, in relation to the line of your swing, not the target line, in your stance.

The Splash Shot Swing

Once you have made the necessary amendments to your address position, you have done most of the hard work. Playing the shot is no different to any other. However, you must remind yourself of the need to swing along the line of your feet and shoulders.

All your hard work at address will count for nothing if, instead of swinging along the line of your body, you decide to swing the club along the ball target line. This will cause you problems because your swing will then be too flat in relation to your body alignment.

How far left you aim depends on the distance you want to hit the ball.

All golfers must understand the need to swing along the line of their feet and shoulders, no matter how strange it feels. Do not forget, the club aims right, the player aims left, and the ball flies straight.

Remember to hit down. Do not try to scoop the ball out of the sand. The sand wedge is designed specially to ease the ball out of a bunker. Swing across the target line and take some sand to hit a perfect bunker shot.
